Welcome

Hello and welcome!
My name is Umar Ruhi, and I am a Professor of Information Systems at the Telfer School of Management, University of Ottawa.

This website serves as my professional portfolio and reflective space. It brings together my work across academic leadership, research, teaching, consulting, and corporate training, along with a personal-professional blog that shares thoughts, stories, and observations on technology, education, and everyday curiosity.

An Informatician's Perspective

Much of my orientation can be described as that of an informatician – someone who studies and shapes how technologies interact with their social and organizational contexts.

Informatics is about more than systems or code: it's about meaning, use, and consequence. My own work often sits at the intersection of management, sociology, and health, applying an interdisciplinary lens to understand how technologies influence decisions, identities, and outcomes.

I see informatics not just as a discipline, but as a way of understanding – how information and technology weave into the fabric of human systems.

This lens continues to inform my current research and practice, particularly through the PRISM Lab, where we explore technology adoption, responsible innovation, and meaningful transformation..

Professional Orientation

Across all my roles – as a researcher, teacher, and consultant – I'm guided by a simple philosophy: technology should empower human potential.

My work emphasizes responsible innovation, digital fluency, and practical insight – connecting academic rigor with real-world impact.
